- Go to the dentist regularly; your dental practitioner will know which medications you can take safely and which procedures can be done at different stages of your pregnancy. They will also be able to monitor your teeth and gums for any issues that may arise and treat accordingly.
- Diligent brushing and flossing; hormonal fluctuations can make your gums more likely to become inflamed or infected. You may get ‘pregnancy gingivitis’, but sticking to a good oral hygiene routine will help your gums go back to normal once your hormones have stabilised
- Morning sickness is an inevitable part of many pregnancies. This can cause enamel erosion - which can make teeth more vulnerable to decay and sensitivity. To avoid this, try not to brush your teeth or eat any hard food immediately after a bout of morning sickness. Try to wait at least an hour, in the mean time, try rinsing your mouth with water to remove acids, chew sugar-free gum or eat/drink acid-neutralising foods (like milk or hard cheese) 🧀🥛
